The Laxmi Kamal, famously known as the Lotus Cactus or Queen of the Night, is an enchanting epiphytic cactus cherished for its breathtaking, large, pure white flowers that bloom dramatically only at night. Its flattened, leaf-like stems create an exotic appeal, making it a unique and captivating addition to any indoor space or shaded outdoor area. The intense, sweet fragrance of its nocturnal blooms is an experience in itself, offering a truly magical display.
Benefits:
Spectacular nocturnal blooms, intense sweet fragrance, unique aesthetic with its flattened stems, relatively low maintenance for its dramatic floral show, non-toxic to pets.
Care Instructions:
Plant in a well-draining, rich potting mix, ideally an orchid or succulent mix enriched with organic matter. Provide bright indirect light; protect from harsh direct sun, especially during the Indian summer. Water thoroughly when the top 1-2 inches of soil are dry, allowing excess water to drain completely. Reduce watering frequency during cooler, dormant months. Fertilize with a balanced liquid fertilizer every 2-4 weeks during the active growing season (spring/summer). Provide a support structure if you wish for it to climb, or allow it to trail. Protect from extreme cold.
Ideal For:
Indoor decor, shaded balconies or patios, plant enthusiasts, collectors of unique flowering plants, those who appreciate highly fragrant and nocturnal blooms.
Common Problems:
Overwatering can lead to root rot and yellowing stems. Insufficient light may hinder blooming. Pests like mealybugs and scale insects can occasionally be an issue. Lack of proper nutrients or immature plant size can prevent flowering.
