Category:

The Red Jade Vine, scientifically known as Mucuna bennettii, is a spectacular tropical climber renowned for its incredibly vibrant, fiery red or orange-red claw-shaped flowers. These dramatic blooms hang in long, pendulous racemes, creating a breathtaking display that resembles cascades of flame. Often called the New Guinea Creeper, it’s a fast-growing, woody vine native to the rainforests of New Guinea, perfectly suited for the warm, humid Indian climate.

Benefits:
Adds dramatic visual appeal and a unique tropical touch to gardens. Provides excellent shade when grown over pergolas and arbors. Attracts pollinators (birds and bats in its native habitat) though less so for typical garden pollinators.

Care Instructions:
Plant in well-draining, fertile soil. Provide a strong, sturdy support structure such as a robust pergola, arbor, or large trellis as it is a vigorous and heavy grower. Water regularly, ensuring the soil remains consistently moist but not waterlogged, especially during dry periods. Fertilize with a balanced liquid fertilizer during the growing season. Prune after flowering to manage growth, encourage bushier blooms, and maintain desired shape. Protect from strong winds.

Ideal For:
Large gardens, pergolas, arbors, fences, tropical landscapes, creating stunning focal points, screening structures.

Common Problems:
Can be susceptible to mealybugs or spider mites, especially in dry conditions. Requires very strong support to prevent structural damage from its vigorous growth. May not flower optimally if it doesn’t receive enough sunlight.
